MECHANICAL ENGINEER: ENGINEERING SERVICES [GRADE A-C] = 1 POST [RE-ADVERT]

This position offers an opportunity for a qualified mechanical engineer to serve as a senior technical resource within the provincial office based in Polokwane. The role is a re-advertised post within the engineering services unit, and is graded at levels A to C, with the appropriate grade determined according to the successful candidate's years of experience after professional registration. The incumbent will perform and manage a wide range of innovative and complex engineering activities, helping to advance technological and engineering applications across the province. This is not a desk-bound role: the engineer must be prepared to travel extensively throughout the province and to work longer hours when required to meet project demands.

To be eligible, applicants must hold an appropriate degree in mechanical engineering and be registered as a professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). In addition, at least three years of post-qualification experience is required. Practical computer literacy is essential, including the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as familiarity with virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver's licence is required, except for candidates with disabilities who are exempt from this condition.

The successful applicant will need a thorough working knowledge of the Provincial Infrastructure Delivery Management System (IDMS) and must be able to operate within all applicable legislation, policies, frameworks and instruction notes. The role demands the ability to provide mechanical engineering inputs and guidance for the development of infrastructure strategies, policies, systems, projects, and functional or technical norms and standards aligned to the IDMS. The engineer should understand how the health service delivery platform, its indicators and service plans link to physical infrastructure, and should also grasp the way government manages acquisitions and disposals of property, as well as provincial and departmental policies relating to leases and property management. Strong analytical skills are needed to undertake risk analyses and develop mitigation strategies. Experience with infrastructure information systems is important, including knowing the information fields required for updating health infrastructure management systems. The role requires meeting strict project deadlines, preparing documentation, writing reports, chairing site meetings, and taking minutes. Financial acumen is also necessary, as the engineer must be able to prepare budgets and extract and interpret information from related information systems.

Key performance areas include undertaking engineering designs and performing final reviews and approvals of audits on new designs according to design principles. The engineer must implement maintenance strategies, set maintenance standards and service levels, and monitor maintenance efficiency to support organisational objectives. The position also entails providing effective engineering and project management services, loading project documents and updating data management systems, conducting research, and managing human, physical and financial resources.
