This is a re-advertised senior engineering vacancy within the Limpopo Department of Health, offering two posts for a Chief Engineer: Electrical, based at the Provincial Office in Polokwane. The successful incumbent will serve as the departmental authority on all electrical engineering matters, providing high-level technical inputs and guidance across the full spectrum of infrastructure delivery. This includes shaping infrastructure strategies, policies, systems, norms and standards, as well as the final signing off on electrical installations. The role is situated within the engineering services unit and is an occupation-specific dispensation (OSD) graded position, with the final salary package determined by the department in line with the successful candidate’s years of experience following professional registration.

Applicants must hold an appropriate degree in Electrical Engineering and be registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), coupled with at least six years of relevant experience. Exposure to a health care environment or another similarly complex operational setting will be a distinct advantage. The department is looking for a candidate who can understand and apply the Provincial Infrastructure Delivery Management System (IDMS), operate within all applicable legislation and policy frameworks, and appreciate the specific engineering services requirements of the health sector. Other essential attributes include computer literacy across standard Microsoft applications and virtual meeting platforms, as well as a valid driver’s licence, unless the applicant has a disability. Given the provincial scope of the work, the post requires a willingness to travel extensively and to work longer hours when necessary.

The core duties are wide-ranging and strategic. The Chief Engineer will undertake electrical engineering designs and perform the final review and approval of audits on new designs, ensuring they comply with established design principles and theory. The role carries responsibility for managing maintenance strategies, including setting engineering maintenance standards, specifications and service levels to ensure optimal operational availability, and monitoring maintenance efficiencies to redirect services where needed. The incumbent will also provide effective engineering and project management services, manage compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related legislation, and ensure project documentation is correctly loaded and updated on the data management system. Additional responsibilities include conducting research, and managing both people and budgets. Ideal candidates will demonstrate the ability to interpret technical specifications for procurement, plan and manage diverse project portfolios, apply computer-aided engineering applications, conduct risk analysis and develop mitigation strategies, prepare technical reports and presentations, and extract budget-related information from relevant systems.

This is a demanding leadership role suited to a professionally registered engineer with strong technical, managerial and analytical skills, and a commitment to delivering safe and reliable electrical infrastructure within the public health sector.
