This sessional appointment is for a Professional Nurse with a specialty qualification, graded at PN-B1 and offering both Grade 1 and Grade 2 entry points, working on a session-by-session basis up to a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week. The post is based at designated public hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts of Limpopo, with centres including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. Successful candidates will be placed in one of the advertised specialty disciplines: operational theatre, critical care adult (ICU), child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care nursing (ICU), trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, or paediatric/child nursing. Because this is a sessional model, the role requires flexibility in working hours, including shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime, depending on the service needs of the hospital.

To be considered, applicants need a basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. In addition, they must hold a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the named specialty areas, accredited by SANC and of at least one year’s duration, with the exception of Neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse is required. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of post-registration nursing experience is needed, of which at least ten years must be appropriate experience in the relevant specialty gained after completing the post-basic qualification. Candidates must also demonstrate knowledge and skill in nursing care processes and procedures within their specialty, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills, as well as information management ability and computer literacy.

The key performance areas of the post include providing direction and supervision in the implementation of the nursing care plan, ensuring quality patient care, and practicing nursing and healthcare in accordance with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations relevant to the field. The nurse will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and is expected to utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. This means taking responsibility for patient outcomes, supporting junior staff through supervision, and maintaining compliance with the regulatory framework governing nursing practice in South Africa.

Remuneration is offered on a sessional basis, determined by the approved sessional rates of the Department of Public Service and Administration and scaled according to the nurse’s appropriate and recognisable experience after SANC registration. This is a sessional appointment with the intention of building a database of professional nurses for flexible deployment at the listed hospitals. Each hospital and specialty discipline has its own application link, so applicants should identify their preferred centre and specialty before applying. The post also requires a commitment to the broader goals of public health service delivery, including teamwork, accountability and continuous quality improvement in specialised nursing care.
