This sessional professional nurse specialty post is open at multiple hospitals across Limpopo’s Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, with placements at facilities such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. The role is structured as a sessional appointment of up to 20 one-hour sessions per week per professional nurse, and it is graded as Professional Nurse Specialty PN-B1, Grade 1 to Grade 2. Successful appointees will be placed in one of the recognised specialty disciplines, including operational theatre, critical care adult ICU, child nursing/paediatrics, child critical care ICU, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, or paediatric/child nursing. The post is part of a broader professional nurses sessional database, meaning applicants may be considered for sessional work as needs arise at the specified hospitals.
To be considered, candidates must hold a basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the relevant specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For entry at Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Sessional remuneration is determined according to the approved sessional rates from the Department of Public Service and Administration, based on appropriate and recognisable experience after SANC registration.
The core duties include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care. The nurse will practise nursing and healthcare in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations, and will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team. Efficient and effective use of human, material and physical resources is also a key responsibility. Candidates must have sound knowledge and skills in nursing care processes within their specialty, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, problem-solving and information management skills, together with computer literacy. A willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required is essential. These sessional posts are ideal for specialist professional nurses seeking flexible, hourly-based work within public hospital settings across Limpopo.
