The Limpopo Department of Health is recruiting experienced specialist nurses for sessional appointments at public hospitals across the province. These posts are professionally graded as Professional Nurse: Specialty, at PN-B1 Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels, and are structured as sessional work with a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week per nurse. The positions are based at a range of hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts, including central and regional facilities such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini, and Mokopane hospitals. Specialty disciplines open for placement are operational theatre nursing, adult critical care (ICU), child nursing and paediatric critical care, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing.

Applicants must hold a basic R425 nursing qualification, such as a diploma or degree in nursing, that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, candidates require a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the designated specialty areas, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except for neonatal ICU nursing, which has a different requirement. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, the applicant needs at least four years of appropriate, recognisable nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse in general nursing. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of post-registration nursing experience is required, of which ten years must be in the specific specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. All appointees must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required.

The key performance areas of these posts include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans and ensuring quality patient care. Nurses will practise nursing and healthcare in accordance with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations relevant to the field. The work is collaborative, requiring engagement with multidisciplinary clinical teams, and nurses must also utilise human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty is required, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, problem-solving, information management, and computer literacy skills.

Remuneration for these sessional appointments is based on the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration, determined by the candidate’s appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC. The recruitment process is managed through a professional nurses database for sessional appointments, with applications made separately for each hospital and specialty. In addition to the specialty posts, the same recruitment drive advertises sessional Professional Nurse with Midwifery positions at Grade 1 to 3 levels, covering a broader list of hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn, and Mopani districts. This presents a valuable opportunity for specialist and midwifery nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery in Limpopo on a flexible, hourly-session basis while remaining registered with the South African Nursing Council.
