The Limpopo Department of Health is offering sessional appointments for professional nurses in specialised clinical fields, as well as for professional nurses with midwifery qualifications. These part-time posts are available across multiple hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts historical referral and district hospitals. The specialty posts are graded at PN-B1 level, with Grade 1 and Grade 2 options, while the midwifery posts are graded from Grade 1 to Grade 3. All appointments are made on a session basis, with each session equivalent to one hour, and a maximum of twenty sessions per week per professional nurse. Remuneration is determined by the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration, and is based on appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council.
The specialty disciplines open for these sessional appointments include operational theatre nursing, critical care adult nursing in intensive care units, child nursing or paediatrics, child critical care nursing in intensive care units, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing. To qualify for the specialty posts, applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, candidates must possess a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the South African Nursing Council, except in the case of neonatal intensive care nursing. Current registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is also essential. For entry at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience is required after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be specifically in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.
The core duties of these sessional professional nurses include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care is delivered, and practicing nursing and healthcare in line with prescribed standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations. Nurses will also work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams and will be expected to utilise human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The roles demand sound knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures relevant to the specialty, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, and problem-solving abilities. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. Given the nature of hospital services, successful candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required.
In addition to the specialty posts, a separate category of sessional appointments is available for professional nurses with midwifery qualifications across an extensive list of hospitals, including facilities such as Elim, Siloam, Donald Frazer, Malamulele, Messina, Louis Trichardt, Tshilidzini, Hayani, Ellisras, Witpoort, Warmbaths, FH Odendaal, George Masebe, Thabazimbi, Voortrekker, Mokopane, Helene Franz, Seshego, WF Knobel, Botlokwa, Lebowakgomo, Zebediela, Pietersburg-Mankweng Complex, Thabamoopo, Nkhensani, Dr CN Phatudi, Maphutha L Malatjie, Kgapane, Sekororo, Van Velden, Letaba, and Evuxakeni hospitals. These midwifery sessional roles follow the same overall sessional structure and remuneration approach, with grade placement based on experience and recognition by the South African Nursing Council. Applicants interested in these opportunities should ensure they meet the relevant nursing and midwifery registration requirements. These sessional posts form part of a broader database of professional nurses available for temporary and part-time service, offering a flexible way for experienced nurses to contribute their specialist skills across the provincial health system while accommodating the service needs of public hospitals.
