This sessional post is for experienced Professional Nurses with a recognised specialty qualification, working on a sessional basis within designated public hospitals across Limpopo. Appointments are for a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week per nurse, allowing for flexible deployment in high-demand clinical areas. The positions are available at hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, with specialties spanning operational theatre nursing, adult critical care, child nursing, child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing. This structure is intended to build a Professional Nurses Database for Sessional appointments, enabling the provincial health department to call on specialist nurses as service needs arise across participating hospitals.
To be considered, applicants need a basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or another qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, accredited by the SANC and lasting at least one year, is required, except for neonatal ICU nursing where a different arrangement applies. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, nurses must have at least four years of appropriate experience after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, the requirement is a minimum of fourteen years of appropriate nursing experience, of which ten years must have been gained in the specific specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Candidates must also be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as operational needs dictate.
The role demands strong clinical and professional skills. Nurses will be expected to provide direction and supervision in implementing nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care at all times. They must practise nursing and healthcare in line with all relevant standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team is central to the position, as is the efficient and effective use of human, material and physical resources. Successful applicants should demonstrate good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities, along with information management skills and basic computer literacy.
Sessional remuneration is determined by the appropriate or recognisable experience gained after registration with the SANC and is paid according to sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. This is an opportunity for specialist nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery in Limpopo while working a flexible number of sessions per week, up to the stated maximum. Those interested should apply through the official channels for the specific hospital and specialty discipline they wish to join, as each centre has its own application link. This is a pooled, sessional appointment model rather than a permanent full-time post, so applicants should review the applicable conditions carefully before applying.
