This vacancy offers sessional appointments for professional nurses who hold a recognised specialty, working under the PN-B1 grade structure within the Limpopo Department of Health. Each nurse may work up to twenty sessions per week, with one session equating to one hour, and appointments are made through a dedicated database of sessional professional nurses. The posts are spread across hospitals in five districts: Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg. The specialties in demand are operational theatre, critical care adult (ICU), child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care nursing (ICU), trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, and paediatric or child nursing. Hospitals hosting these posts include Pietersburg and Mankweng in Capricorn; Letaba in Mopani; St Ritas and Philadelphia in Sekhukhune; Tshilidzini in Vhembe; and Mokopane in Waterberg. Each facility has its own application link for each specialty, so candidates must apply specifically for the hospital and discipline they are qualified in.

To be considered, a nurse must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, such as a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a professional nurse. In addition, applicants need a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialties, accredited by SANC and lasting at least one year, with a noted exception for neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with SANC as a professional nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable experience in nursing after registration is required. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten must be specifically in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. All appointees must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required.

The role demands solid knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures within the chosen specialty, as well as skills in communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans and ensuring quality patient care; practising nursing and healthcare in line with standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations; working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team; and using human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively.

In addition to the specialty posts, the same vacancy includes a separate stream for professional nurses with midwifery, graded at levels 1 to 3, also on a sessional basis with the same maximum of twenty sessions per week. The midwifery appointments are available at numerous hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts, including Elim, Siloam, Donald Frazer, Malamulele, Messina, Louis Trichardt, Tshilidzini and Hayani in Vhembe; Ellisras, Witpoort, Warmbaths, FH Odendaal or MDR TB, George Masebe, Thabazimbi, Voortrekker and Mokopane in Waterberg; Helene Franz, Seshego, WF Knobel, Botlokwa, Lebowakgomo, Zebediela, Pietersburg-Mankweng Complex and Thabamoopo in Capricorn; and Nkhensani, Dr CN Phatudi, Maphutha L Malatjie, Kgapane, Sekororo, Van Velden, Letaba and Evuxakeni in Mopani. Remuneration for both streams is sessional and based on appropriate, recognisable experience after SANC registration, using rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administrationhol, making these positions OSD-graded sessional opportunities.
