This vacancy is a sessional appointment for experienced specialist professional nurses within the Limpopo Department of Health, graded at Professional Nurse Specialty PN-B1 Grade 1 or Grade 2. The role is based at a network of hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, with available specialty areas including operational theatre, adult intensive care, child nursing, child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing. These are not permanent posts but sessional appointments, meaning nurses are engaged on an hourly session basis, with each session equating to one hour and a maximum of twenty sessions permitted per nurse per week. Remuneration is set according to DPSA-approved sessional rates and is linked to appropriate, recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council.
Applicants need to hold a basic R425 qualification, either a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the SANC as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, of at least one year’s duration and accredited by the SANC, is required, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the correct specialty is also essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a candidate must have at least four years of relevant experience in nursing after registration as a professional nurse in general nursing. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of relevant nursing experience after general nursing registration, of which at least ten years must be in the relevant specialty after completing the post-basic qualification. Candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as operational needs require.
The core duties involve directing and supervising the implementation of the nursing care plan, ensuring quality patient care, and practising nursing according to professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. Nurses will also work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team and must manage human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes in the specialty is expected, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management abilities and computer literacy are also required.
The advertisement also includes a separate category for Professional Nurse with Midwifery, covering Grades 1 to 3, at a broader range of hospitals in Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts, including Elim, Siloam, Louis Trichardt, Tshilidzini, Ellisras, Warmbaths, Mokopane, Seshego, Lebowakgomo, Pietersburg-Mankweng, Nkhensani, Kgapane and Letaba, among others. This part of the recruitment process forms a sessional professional nurses database, from which nursing managers can draw as service needs arise. Candidates interested in either the specialty stream or the midwifery stream should ensure they meet the relevant SANC registration and experience requirements before applying, and should note that these are flexible, sessional work arrangements intended to supplement hospital capacity across the province.
