This is a sessional professional nurse specialty vacancy within the Limpopo provincial health services, offering appointments on an hourly session basis across multiple hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. The role is graded as Professional Nurse Specialty PN-B1, with Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels, and each appointee may work a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week. The specialty disciplines covered include operational theatre nursing, critical care adult ICU, child nursing or paediatrics, child critical care ICU, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal nursing, and paediatric or child nursing. A separate category within the same advertisement covers professional nurses with midwifery qualifications, also on a sessional basis, at a broader list of hospitals across the same districts, with grades ranging from 1 to 3.

To qualify for the specialty posts, candidates must hold the basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the South African Nursing Council, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse in the relevant specialty is also essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. All applicants must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required.

The key performance areas of the role include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care. The professional nurse will practise nursing and healthcare in line with standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations relevant to nursing and healthcare. The role also requires working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and utilising human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Knowledge and skills expected include a solid understanding of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty, good communication and report writing abilities, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills, information management skills, and computer literacy.

Remuneration for these sessional appointments is based on appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council, as determined by sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. The advertisement notes that appointments are made from a professional nurses database for sessional work, and candidates should apply specifically for the hospital and specialty discipline of interest. These positions are ideal for experienced specialist nurses seeking flexible, part-time work within the public health sector while contributing to specialised patient care across Limpopo’s hospitals.
