PROFESSIONAL NURSE: SPECIALTY [PN-B1] GRADE 1–2 SESSIONAL APPOINTMENTS: MAXIMUM OF 20 SESSIONS PER WEEK PER PN (1 SESSION = 1 HOUR)

This sessional appointment opportunity is open to professional nurses who hold a recognised specialty qualification and wish to work on a part-time basis within public hospitals across Limpopo. The posts are graded as Professional Nurse Specialty PN-B1 Grade 1 or Grade 2, and each nurse may be appointed for a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week. The available centres are situated in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, with specific hospitals including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane. The specialties in demand are operational theatre, critical care adult (ICU), child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care nursing (ICU), trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, and paediatric/child nursing.

To be considered, applicants must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accreditation by SANC in the relevant specialty, except for neonatal ICU nursing where a different arrangement applies. Current registration with SANC as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a professional nurse with SANC in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. All appointees must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required.

The role demands a solid command of nursing care processes and procedures within the chosen specialty, as well as strong communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management capabilities and computer literacy are also necessary. Key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care, practising nursing and healthcare in accordance with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team, and utilising human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively.

Remuneration is on a sessional basis, determined by the appropriate or recognisable experience after registration with SANC, and paid according to the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration.
