This is a sessional professional nurse specialist post within the Limpopo Department of Health, open to registered nurses who hold a post-basic qualification in one of the recognised specialty disciplines. Appointments are made on a session basis, with each session representing one hour and a maximum of twenty sessions per week. The post is graded at PN-B1 level and spans both Grade 1 and Grade 2, meaning candidates with varying levels of experience may be considered depending on how many years of appropriate nursing service they can demonstrate.

The vacant sessions are distributed across several hospitals in Limpopo, including Pietersburg and Mankweng hospitals in Capricorn District, Letaba Hospital in Mopani, St Ritas and Philadelphia hospitals in Sekhukhune, Tshilidzini Hospital in Vhembe, and Mokopane Hospital in Waterberg. The specialties required across these centres include operating theatre nursing, adult critical care (ICU), child nursing and paediatrics, child critical care (ICU), trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing. Applicants are expected to indicate the specialty and hospital for which they wish to be considered, as appointments are tied to specific units.

To qualify, candidates must hold a basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, they must have completed a post-basic nursing qualification in the relevant specialty area, of at least one year’s duration and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate experience as a professional nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, the requirement is a minimum of fourteen years of appropriate experience, of which ten years must have been gained in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.

The successful candidate will be expected to direct and supervise the implementation of nursing care plans and ensure quality patient care. They must practise nursing in line with relevant legislation, regulations, standards and quality indicators, and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams. Efficient and effective use of human, material and physical resources is also a key responsibility. The role requires strong knowledge of nursing care processes in the specialty area, sound communication and report-writing skills, facilitation and liaison abilities, problem-solving skills, information management capability, and computer literacy.

Applicants must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as required. The sessional remuneration is determined by the Department of Public Service and Administration’s approved sessional rates and is based on the candidate’s recognisable experience after registration with the SANC. These appointments form part of a professional nurses database for sessional work, offering flexibility in staffing while ensuring hospitals have access to specialist nursing skills across the province.
