This sessional vacancy invites experienced professional nurses to join the Limpopo Department of Health’s professional nurses database for specialty nursing services. The post is graded as Professional Nurse: Specialty (PN-B1) Grade 1 to Grade 2 and operates on a sessional basis, meaning appointees may work up to twenty sessions per week, with one session equal to one hour. Successful candidates will be placed at designated hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. The specialties required are operational theatre nursing, critical care adult ICU, child nursing or paediatrics, child critical care ICU, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal nursing and paediatric or child nursing. This is an OSD-graded sessional position, and remuneration is calculated according to the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration, based on the nurse’s recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council.

To qualify, candidates must hold the basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, applicants must have completed a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing where a different requirement applies. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For entry at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate, recognisable nursing experience after registration in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Practitioners must also be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when needed.

The role demands sound knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures within the chosen specialty, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities. Information management skills and computer literacy are also expected. Key performance areas include directing and supervising the implementation of nursing care plans to ensure quality patient care, practising nursing and healthcare in line with professional standards, quality indicators and relevant legislation, working collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams, and using human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively.

The advertisement also forms part of a broader recruitment effort to build a professional nurses database for sessional appointments. In addition to the specialty posts described above, the same advertisement covers sessional appointments for professional nurses with midwifery at a wider range of hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts. Those midwifery posts are graded from Grade 1 to Grade 3 and similarly offer up to twenty sessions per week, with sessional remuneration based on experience and registration with the SANC. Specific application links are provided for each hospital and specialty discipline, allowing candidates to apply directly for the particular centre and clinical area that suits their qualifications and experience. All appointments are subject to the department’s normal verification and employment checks, and candidates should be prepared to practice within the ethical and regulatory framework of the South African Nursing Council.
