This sessional appointment opportunity is open to professional nurses who hold a recognised specialty qualification and wish to work on an hourly basis at public hospitals across the Limpopo province. The posts are graded PN-B1 and cover both Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels, with appointments capped at a maximum of twenty sessions per week, where one session is equivalent to one hour. The hospitals are located in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, and the specialties in demand include operational theatre nursing, critical care for adults, child nursing, child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing.
To be eligible for these posts, applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification in nursing, such as a diploma or degree, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, candidates need a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty disciplines, which must be accredited with the South African Nursing Council and have a minimum duration of one year, with the exception of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is also mandatory. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates must have at least fourteen years of such nursing experience, of which ten years must be specifically in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. A willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required is an inherent requirement of the role.
The key performance areas for these sessional professional nurses include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care, and practising nursing and healthcare in line with established standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. Nurses will also work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and are expected to utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The role demands sound knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures within the relevant specialty, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required, as nurses will need to document and manage patient information competently.
These sessional appointments form part of a professional nurses database, and remuneration is determined according to the candidate’s appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council, based on sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. The same sessional employment initiative also includes professional nurse posts with midwifery, covering Grade 1 to Grade 3, at additional hospitals in Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts, offering flexible hourly work for eligible midwives. Applicants should be aware that these are sessional, non-permanent positions rather than full-time posts, and will require flexibility in working hours to meet hospital service needs across weekends and public holidays.
