This vacancy is for a large intake of sessional Medical Officers at Grade 1, 2, or 3, with 151 positions available across all hospitals managed by the provincial health department in Limpopo. The role is part-time and remunerated on a per-session basis, with the grade determined by the number of years of appropriate, recognisable experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an independent medical practitioner. Grade 1 is for those with less than five years of such experience, Grade 2 requires at least five but less than ten years, and Grade 3 is for ten years or more. All applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration as an independent medical practitioner with the HPCSA, and must have current, valid registration. In addition, candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents and must possess a valid driver's licence.
The work itself is demanding and flexible in nature. Medical Officers will be expected to provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, and to perform ward rounds, outreach programmes, and medical services at special events or during disaster operations across the province. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated timeframes, maintain best clinical practice according to quality standards, and keep up to date through the HPCSA's Continuing Professional Development system. Generating and maintaining accurate medical records, participating in the department's Quality Improvement Programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring that clinical protocols are followed are all central duties. Where required, the incumbent will also supervise, instruct, and train medical interns, community service officers, registrars, and other medical officers in one or more clinical disciplines. The role demands a willingness to work shifts, flexi hours, night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as to work extra hours on short notice and to perform commuted overtime when the operational need arises and is approved by the Accounting Officer. Candidates must be comfortable working after hours and under pressure, and must be able to generate reports using PowerPoint, Word, and Excel, as well as using virtual meeting platforms.
Applicants should bring sound clinical knowledge spanning general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and both sexes at district health service level, along with a solid understanding of the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa and sound medical ethics. Leadership, communication, presentation, budgeting, and data collection and analysis skills are also required. Personal attributes expected include integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, accountability, reliability, a proactive and results-oriented approach, calmness under pressure, adaptability, respectfulness, and a strong team orientation. A commitment to continuous learning and the Batho Pele principles is essential. This is a sessional post, meaning that working hours are irregular and driven by service needs, and the ability to work independently without supervision after hours is vital. The department expects rational use of resources and full adherence to clinical governance. Interested medical practitioners should note that a skills declaration form must be attached to the application, and that the inherent requirements of the job are non-negotiable. The positions are spread over a wide network of hospitals, so candidates should indicate their preferred centre when applying. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified medical professionals to contribute to public healthcare delivery in a flexible, sessional capacity while earning competitive rates based on their level of experience.
