This vacancy is for a sessional Medical Officer at Grade 1, 2, or 3, with a total of 151 positions available across all public hospitals in the Limpopo Province. This is a large-scale recruitment drive aimed at strengthening clinical services throughout the provincial hospital network, and the roles are offered on a sessional (part-time or contract) basis rather than as full-time permanent posts. Successful candidates will be placed at one of the many listed hospitals, from Botlokwa to Voortrekker, depending on operational needs and the preference indicated during the application process. The role is central to the delivery of district health services, requiring a generalist medical practitioner who can provide comprehensive care across all age groups and both sexes, including emergency care, ward management, and participation in outreach programmes.

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must be currently registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. The grade at which an applicant is appointed depends on their years of appropriate, recognisable experience after obtaining this registration: Grade 1 requires less than five years, Grade 2 requires at least five but less than ten years, and Grade 3 requires ten or more years. All applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. Additional inherent requirements include a valid driver's licence, computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications and virtual meeting platforms, and a willingness to work shifts, flexi hours, night duty, weekends, public holidays, and to perform overtime on short notice. Commuted overtime may be approved by the Accounting Officer based on operational needs.

The core duties of the post are extensive. The medical officer will provide clinical care, including emergency care, in designated areas and must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters. They will perform ward rounds, run outreach programmes, and provide medical services at special events and operations anywhere in the province. Maintaining best clinical practice according to quality standards is essential, which includes continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA, generating and maintaining accurate medical records, participating in the department's quality improvement programmes, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring clinical protocols are followed. The officer may also be required to supervise, instruct, and train medical interns, community service officers, and registrars, and must undertake any other duties allocated by a supervisor without boundary restrictions.

Knowledge and skills required include a sound understanding of medical theory and practice, the legal aspects of medicine in South Africa, strong clinical skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics at district level, leadership and communication abilities, and sound medical ethics. Personal attributes such as integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, accountability, calmness under pressure, and a team-oriented approach are also important. This is an OSD-graded sessional position with rates differing by grade, and applicants are expected to attach a skills declaration form. The department encourages applications from all eligible individuals, and while no specific equity targets are mentioned, the recruitment is for a wide range of hospitals, so candidates should apply directly to their preferred institution. Given the large number of positions, this is an excellent opportunity for qualified medical practitioners seeking flexible sessional work within a provincial health system.
