This is a sessional Medical Officer position, graded at levels 1 through 3, with 151 posts available at all hospitals across Limpopo province. The role is based within the provincial Department of Health and offers part-time or contract work on a sessional basis. It is an excellent opportunity for qualified medical practitioners who wish to contribute to public healthcare services in a variety of hospital settings, from district hospitals to specialised facilities. The position requires registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The grade at which the successful candidate is appointed depends on their years of appropriate experience after registration: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years, Grade 2 for at least five but less than ten years, and Grade 3 for ten years or more. A valid driver's licence is required, along with computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms. Candidates must be willing to work shifts, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and to work extra hours on short notice. Commuted overtime may be approved by the Accounting Officer based on operational needs and the flexi/shift system.

The main duties of the Medical Officer include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, performing ward rounds, and participating in outreach programmes. The incumbent will be expected to respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters, and to maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards. This involves continuous professional development through the HPCSA system, generating and maintaining medical records, participating in quality improvement programmes, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring clinical protocols are followed. The role also includes teaching and supervision of medical interns, community service officers, and registrars, as well as coordinating clinical responsibilities in designated areas. Additional duties may be allocated by the supervisor without boundary restrictions.

Candidates should have sound clinical knowledge and skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level. They must understand and apply the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, as well as clinical governance principles. Good leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently after hours. Personal attributes such as integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, accountability, reliability, and a proactive, results-oriented approach are required. The successful candidate must remain calm under pressure, be adaptable to change, and treat stakeholders with respect and diplomacy. A commitment to continuous learning and Batho Pele principles is also expected. A skills declaration form must be attached to the application. These sessional posts provide a flexible way to contribute to public health while gaining experience across different hospitals and clinical settings.
