This is a sessional medical officer vacancy within the Limpopo Department of Health, offering 151 posts across all public hospitals in the province. The role is open to qualified medical practitioners who are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as independent practitioners. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The position is graded from 1 to 3 depending on years of relevant experience after registration: less than five years for Grade 1, five to less than ten years for Grade 2, and ten years or more for Grade 3. This means both early-career and experienced doctors are encouraged to apply, with remuneration aligned to the relevant sessional grade.

The core responsibilities involve providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency medicine, in designated hospital areas. Medical officers will be expected to perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events or during provincial operations. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including disaster situations. Maintaining high standards of clinical practice is essential, supported by continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA. The role also requires accurate medical record-keeping, participation in the facility's quality improvement programme, conducting clinical audits, and ensuring compliance with clinical protocols. In addition, medical officers may be required to supervise and train medical interns, community service officers, registrars, and other junior staff, and to take part in teaching and academic activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Candidates must possess sound clinical knowledge across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, suitable for district health services and all age groups. A thorough understanding of South African medical law and ethics, clinical governance, and rational resource use is expected. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are also required. Computer literacy is essential, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms, as is the ability to generate reports and analyse data. A valid driver's licence is mandatory.

Given the sessional nature of the posts, incumbents must be willing to work shifts, flexi hours, night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and to perform overtime on short notice when operational needs arise. Commuted overtime may be approved by the Accounting Officer based on service requirements. The ability to work after hours independently and without supervision is also expected. Personal attributes such as integrity, professionalism, accountability, calmness under pressure, adaptability, and a team-oriented approach are critical. A commitment to Batho Pele principles and continuous learning is also required. Applicants must submit a skills declaration form as part of the application process. These positions are based at various hospitals across Limpopo, and applicants should apply to the specific hospital of their choice.
