This is a sessional medical officer opportunity within the Limpopo Department of Health, offering 151 posts across all public hospitals in the province. The role is graded from Grade 1 to Grade 3 based on years of experience after registration as an independent medical practitioner with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Sessional appointments mean that incumbents are remunerated at sessional rates and are expected to work flexibly, including night duty, weekends, public holidays, and overtime on short notice, as operational needs require. Commuted overtime may be approved by the Accounting Officer on a flexi or shift system.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered. Grade 1 requires less than five years of appropriate experience, Grade 2 requires at least five but less than ten years, and Grade 3 requires ten or more years. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. A valid driver's licence is required, as is computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms. A skills declaration form must be attached to the application.
The ideal candidate will have sound knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, including the legal aspects of medicine in South Africa. Clinical skills must cover general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are expected, along with the ability to collect and analyse data. The role demands sound medical ethics, an understanding of clinical governance, and the ability to work independently after hours without supervision, while using resources rationally.
Personal attributes sought include integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, accountability, reliability, a proactive and results-oriented approach, calmness under pressure, adaptability, respect, diplomacy, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous learning and Batho Pele principles. Key performance areas include providing clinical and emergency care, performing ward rounds and outreach programmes, responding to emergency and disaster calls, maintaining best clinical practice through CPD, keeping accurate medical records, participating in quality improvement programmes and clinical audits, and supervising or training medical interns, community service officers, and registrars. Additional duties may be allocated without boundary restrictions.
These positions are available at all hospitals in the province, each with its own contact number and application link, so applicants should apply directly to the hospital of their choice. The nature of the work requires a willingness to work after hours, weekends, and public holidays, and to perform overtime when needed. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified medical practitioners seeking flexible sessional work in a public health setting.
